There are 2 main Highland County wildlife management areas: part of Jack Mountain is only 5 miles from Monterey, and the Bull Pasture River Gorge area is about 11 miles south of McDowell. There are also plenty of hiking opportunities and there's swimming at the gorge. 
    
  
The George Washington section of the George Washington and Jefferson national forests makes up a good portion of Highland County.
  
The eastern part is managed by the Deerfield Ranger District, which includes the Confederate Breastworks on Shenandoah Mountain, which is also a good place for a hike.
  
The western part along with Highland County's Laurel Forks Special Management Area is managed by the Warm Springs Ranger District.
   
Several birding clubs visit Highland County for excellent bird watching opportunities. You can also enjoy hunting and fishing on and around the Bull Pasture River and various stocked ponds. The Virginia Highlands Fly-fishing guide service does several streams in Highland County, and the Virginia Trout Company has fishing next to their trout ponds. Local golfers enjoy the Needle's Eye Golf Course and the Highlands Golf Club.
